nca | nichido contemporary art and A Thousand Plateaus Art Space (Chengdu) present six artists — Maria Nepomuceno, Janaina Tschäpe, Chihhung Liu, Chen Qiulin, Bi Rongrong, and Yang Shu — whose works remind us that the world is not fixed but continuously woven. Through sculpture, painting, video, and mixed media, they turn fragments of life — a rope, a brushstroke, a song, a memory — into forms that hold together vulnerability and vitality, intimacy and transformation.
Maria Nepomuceno’s rope-and-bead sculptures extend the lineage of Brazilian craft into organic constellations, resonating with Bi Rongrong’s copper-based works, where textiles, lace, and embroidery are layered into shifting visual fabrics drawn from urban and cultural patterns. Within painting, Janaina Tschäpe dissolves bodies, myths, and landscapes into fluid abstractions; Chihhung Liu reshapes fragments of scenery and memory into layered images between recognition and reverie; and Yang Shu’s Where? (2014) series presses painting toward raw immediacy, where gesture and color release instinctive energy. In counterpoint, Chen Qiulin’s Another Day (2014-2016) dwell on the unhurried rhythms of a Dong minority village, where women’s songs and daily acts form an embodied archive resisting erasure.
Exhibiting together, these works do not resolve into a single image. They weave traditions and contemporary urgencies, personal memory and shared landscape, abstraction and lived reality. What connects them is not similarity but resonance — a set of crossings where different cultural lineages, through the language of contemporary art, open onto questions that belong to us all.
